Chevrolet has resurrected the Trailblazer nameplate with an all-new subcompact crossover that has a sportier look but lacks the off-road capability of the much bigger SUV that used to bear the name. The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer goes in between the subcompact Chevrolet Trax and the mid-size Chevrolet Blazer, the end of which inspires the new model’s powerful bodywork.
The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer has similar components to the new Buick Encore GX, including its drivetrain and engines. A group of turbocharged three-cylinder engines is provided with a 1.2-liter being standard and also a 1.3-liter unit serving as the upgrade. Neither any of them delivers quick acceleration, but the Trailblazer has a spacious cabin which is enough to convince buyers to overlook its powertrain shortcomings.
The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer offers two different turbocharged three-cylinder engines, a 1.2-liter, and a 1.3-liter. The former creates about 137 horsepower and the latter generates about 155 horses. The 1.2-liter engine comes with a front-wheel-drive and is supplied with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), while the 1.3-liter offers a voluntary all-wheel drive. Going for the all-wheel-drive system also replaces the CVT with a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic. The Trailblazer delivers 60mph in 9.4 seconds.
The cabin’s design of the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer isn’t as fancy as the exterior’s, but it’s roomy, functional, and outfitted with a lot of convenience items in the upper trims. Even though most of the interior designs are rendered in black plastic, everything has an attractive texture to avoid appearing less expensive.
Upper-level models add colored trim pieces and chrome decoration that provide a more exclusive look. Behind the rear seat is a very spacious cargo bay, and the Chevrolet provides not only fold-flat rear seats but also a folding front passenger seat to create more space for long items. It’s a very clever feature, but the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer doesn’t quite match the cargo-carrying invention offered by the Honda HR-V.
